Collection of Souvenirs

The Collection of Souvenirs was created in 2013 when objects that were already part of the Museum's holdings were included in it, mostly souvenir dolls. It contains 575 souvenirs from Croatia, but also from other parts of the world. The objects were partly donated by citizens who bought souvenirs on their travels, most often dolls in traditional costumes, and there are objects that interpret elements of Croatian culture. Souvenirs that were very common in Croatia in the second half of the 20th century, such as wooden figures of herons, mostly made by prisoners in the Workshops for Carving and Weaving, have also found their place in the Collection. An interesting part of the Collection consists of objects that arrived at the Museum in the 1930s, and which were sold as handicrafts on Ban Jelačić Square in Zagreb. The sale was regulated by the "Rules for Regulating the Sale of Traditional Handicrafts", which stipulated that the Ethnographic Museum would determine whether a certain product is handmade, that is, whether it could be sold on Ban Jelačić Square.
